ArtCraft vs Adobe: The 7 Free Open-Source Apps Explained

ArtCraft is a set of seven free, open source desktop apps that line up with Adobe’s main creative programs. They are written in Rust, run on macOS, Windows, and Linux, and you can choose MIT or Apache-2.0. They are not made by Adobe, and they are not finished replacements.

PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, PdfCraft, EffectCraft, and DesignCraft are those seven programs. Calling ArtCraft an open source Adobe alternative describes the license and the job each app aims at. It does not mean ArtCraft matches Adobe feature for feature. These ArtCraft apps are the whole suite, and each one is paired with a single Adobe product. PhotoCraft is for Photoshop. VectorCraft is for Illustrator. FilmCraft is for Premiere Pro. LightCraft is for Lightroom. PdfCraft is for Acrobat. EffectCraft is for After Effects. DesignCraft is for InDesign.

The matrix under this section is that same ArtCraft pairing in a form you can scan. Only PhotoCraft and PdfCraft are marked early alpha. No. ArtCraft cannot replace Adobe today if you need a finished suite for daily client work. Two ArtCraft apps are early alpha, and five are still in development. PhotoCraft is the furthest along of the image editors, and even that app is early alpha. Version 0.7.0 was published on GitHub Releases on 2026-10-11 UTC, and the web build is a web zip of 11,044,166 bytes, according to the PhotoCraft repository. The README states, in its own words, that PhotoCraft is not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work. That ArtCraft app still lacks generative features, fifteen tools, deeper typography, and plugin compatibility. Those ArtCraft gaps are enough to keep Photoshop for paid work.

VectorCraft and LightCraft publish their own readiness estimates, and those numbers are not a score for the whole suite. By VectorCraft’s own estimate, fitness for real work is about 65 percent. By LightCraft’s own estimate, everyday replacement is about 61 percent. Neither figure is a PSDraw measurement of ArtCraft. The ArtCraft Adobe question, for the suite as a whole, stays not yet. Keep the Adobe app when a missing feature would cost you the job, and use the PhotoCraft guide if Photoshop is the only app you meant.

ArtCraft AI is not one of the seven open source apps. ArtCraft AI is a separate image and video product on the web. The ArtCraft desktop apps are editors you install or run as WebAssembly. The AI product generates pictures and video, then lets you arrange that work.

Mixing the two ArtCraft names is the fastest way to misunderstand both the price and the license. The AI app lives at app.getartcraft.com. ArtCraft AI includes a 2D canvas and 3D scenes, and it groups several models, including Veo, Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana, and GPT Image. The pricing page says you can bring your own compute and third-party subscriptions. The ArtCraft AI site describes the offer as free to start, with no subscription. ArtCraft AI cloud generation can still spend paid credits. Bringing your own compute is the other path ArtCraft describes. That bill is separate from the seven ArtCraft apps, which do not charge a license fee.

PhotoCraft does not include those generative tools. Its README lists AI and generative features among the gaps. Driving PhotoCraft through a UI, a CLI, JSON, or MCP is automation of the editor, not image generation. If you came for model credits, you want ArtCraft AI. If you came for layers and PSD files, you want the open source apps. They share an ArtCraft brand and not a feature list, which is why this section exists.

If the suite is too early, other free Adobe alternatives are the sensible next stop. ArtCraft does not have to be your only free option, and this page will not pretend to rank every editor. A tool with years of daily use can be a better fit than an alpha.

Free does not always mean open source. An open source Adobe alternative lets you read the code.
