DesignCraft: ArtCraft's Free Page Layout App, Online

DesignCraft is a page layout editor from the team behind ArtCraft, the group that released free, open-source counterparts to Photoshop, Word, Excel and other Adobe and Microsoft apps in October 2026. The GitHub description calls it a clean-room reimplementation of Adobe InDesign, written from scratch in pure Rust. Clean-room means it was built from public specifications and observed behaviour, not from Adobe code, and the README says DesignCraft is not affiliated with or endorsed by Adobe.

The app mirrors InDesign’s mental model: spreads, parent pages, text frames with threading, and the panels a layout artist knows. The README highlights a Knuth–Plass paragraph composer with dictionary hyphenation — the class of justification engine InDesign itself uses — plus multithreaded SIMD rendering and copy-on-write documents with O(1) undo.

It is also scriptable end to end: every menu item, tool gesture, panel control and dialog can be driven over a command channel, which is what makes the browser build and the MCP integration possible. Our test opened the welcome screen with a sample magazine and a template wall for Letter through A4.

DesignCraft vs InDesign is a question of interchange and polish. The typography and layout model are genuinely modern — a Knuth–Plass composer is not a toy — and IDML gives it a real exchange path. The gap list is honest about the blockers: no INDD reading, a Smart Text Reflow bug, and object copy/paste broken on Windows and Linux.

The table below turns the DesignCraft README and its gap list into simple marks. InDesign keeps a yes on the rows a print production house needs; DesignCraft wins the last row outright.

Layout fundamentals work: documents with spreads and parent pages, text frames with threading, tables, object styles, and precise control over margins and columns. The typography stack is the headline — a Knuth–Plass paragraph composer (with a single-line fallback), dictionary hyphenation, open type features and the kind of justification quality print designers argue about. Tables, object styles and the parent-page system round out the daily fundamentals.

Interchange is defined by IDML: DesignCraft imports and exports InDesign’s XML-based interchange format, which is how work moves between it and InDesign. Output covers PNG, PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b — the PDF standards a print shop actually asks for — plus a documented native format for backup and long-term migration.

The quickest way is our hosted copy of the official web build — a free InDesign alternative online with no account. Click the button at the top of this page or open DesignCraft online. The first visit downloads about 15 MB, then the welcome screen opens in a new tab. DesignCraft online works best in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Step 1: click New file and pick a page size, or open the sample magazine to see a real document first. Step 2: draw a text frame with the Type tool, and thread it to the next page the InDesign way. Step 3: apply a parent page so running headers and page numbers stay consistent.

Step 4: use File, then Export, to produce a PDF for print — PDF/X-4 is the preset a commercial printer will ask for. There is no autosave in the web build, so save early: Save downloads a copy, because the browser cannot write over your original.

Get every DesignCraft download from the DesignCraft releases on GitHub or the DesignCraft page on getartcraft.com. DesignCraft v0.7.1 was published on Oct 12, 2026 — the app has been iterating daily since the repository opened on Oct 1.

On Windows there are MSI installers and portable zips for x64, ARM64 and 32-bit x86. On macOS there is one universal DMG, plus a separate command-line tool. Linux users get AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm and tar.gz builds for x86_64 and ARM64, plus a RISC-V tarball, and FreeBSD has its own build.

The web build is a static site zip; that is the file PSDraw hosts, unchanged and checksum-verified. Every release includes SHA256SUMS.txt, so compare the checksum before you install. The DesignCraft GitHub repository is github.com/storytold/designcraft, under the same storytold account as PhotoCraft and the other Crafting Apps. It was created on Oct 1, 2026 and passed 3,700 stars within two weeks — layout artists noticed fast, because a free InDesign alternative with a real justification engine is rare.

The code is offered under your choice of MIT or Apache-2.0. The ArtCraft name and logo are trademarks outside that license, and our ArtCraft open source guide explains the fork rules. The README links the roadmap (stage: pre-alpha), a target-app-parity document and the gap list, all public — issues and pull requests are open too.

The gap list leads with the interchange blocker: INDD files — the format InDesign users actually receive — cannot be opened in DesignCraft yet. Two clean-room INDD converters are in progress, but until they land, IDML is the only bridge, and not every InDesign feature survives IDML either.

Stability gaps affect daily work. Smart Text Reflow on Primary Text Frames has a reported bug that can leave pages a designer cannot remove, and object copy/paste is broken on Windows and Linux — which the project itself calls the difference between a demo and a job. Both are named blockers on DesignCraft’s road to alpha and beta.

Two limits are specific to DesignCraft online. There is no autosave in the browser, so Save downloads a copy — which makes frequent saves cheap, if slightly repetitive. And DesignCraft is built for desktop: on a phone it may be slow or not open at all.

DesignCraft online runs in any modern desktop browser on WebAssembly. The project’s hosting notes say the build needs no cross-origin isolation headers, so plain static hosting is enough — that is how we serve it. The same WebAssembly build powers the desktop app, so the browser build is a first-class target rather than a stripped viewer.

Desktop Chrome and Edge are what we verified on Oct 14, 2026. Firefox and Safari can run WebAssembly builds of this kind, but the project does not claim they are tested; if the editor does not start, try Chrome or Edge first.

Phones and tablets are not the target: page layout needs a large viewport, precise pointing and keyboard shortcuts. The launch block on this page warns mobile visitors for that reason. Typography work also rewards a colour-accurate display — the web build inherits whatever the browser, the operating system and the monitor can do.
