Is ArtCraft Really Open Source, Free and Safe?
Unofficial guide · Updated Oct 11, 2026 · 9 min read
TL;DR
Yes. The ArtCraft open source license is your choice of MIT or Apache-2.0 on the named repositories, the seven apps are free, and ArtCraft AI cloud credits are not.
- You may choose MIT or Apache-2.0 on PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, LightCraft, and the main ArtCraft repository.
- The ArtCraft name and logo are not included. A published modified build has to remove them, unless the fork exists only to propose changes upstream.
- Windows packages are signed, the Mac DMG is notarized, and every PhotoCraft release includes SHA256SUMS.txt.
As of Oct 11, 2026

The catch: free and open source does not mean the apps are ready for daily client work. PhotoCraft v0.7.0 is still early alpha. Official site: https://getartcraft.com.
Verdict: Use the code under the stated license, keep the trademark rules, and install only from the official sources.
The ArtCraft open source code is public, and the license is permissive, with a hard stop on the name and the logo. As of Oct 11, 2026, PhotoCraft and PdfCraft were early alpha, and the other five ArtCraft apps were in development. This unofficial ArtCraft guide answers what you may do with the code, what stays trademarked, how the free apps differ from paid AI credits, and how to install without leaving the official sources. It is not a law firm and it is not the publisher. The ArtCraft repositories live under the storytold account, and the apps are listed at getartcraft.com.
Short answer: is ArtCraft open source?
Yes. The short answer is that ArtCraft is open source under a permissive license on the repositories the Oct 11, 2026 fact sheet checked. You choose MIT or Apache-2.0 for PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, LightCraft, and the main ArtCraft repository. Do not paste that pair onto a different repository until you open its README.
Open source here means you can read the ArtCraft code, not that every tool inside the apps is finished. Brandon Thomas is the ArtCraft author named in coverage. The PhotoCraft README says the project is independent and not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Adobe Inc. PetaPixel on Oct 7, 2026 reported that Brandon Thomas used Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 to recreate seven Adobe apps in Rust. That report is about who wrote the code. It is not a maturity score.
PhotoCraft v0.7.0 was published on Oct 11, 2026 UTC and the README still refuses the daily-replacement label. The seven ArtCraft apps are PhotoCraft, VectorCraft, FilmCraft, LightCraft, PdfCraft, EffectCraft, and DesignCraft. They are native Rust programs for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with FreeBSD packages as well. Six ArtCraft apps can run in the browser through WebAssembly. FilmCraft’s apps-page card has no Web badge, but FilmCraft v0.6.0 ships a web zip and the README says the engine runs in the browser. A star snapshot from Oct 11, 2026 put PhotoCraft at 44,228 and the main ArtCraft repository at about 15,612. Stars show attention. They do not show that an ArtCraft build is done. Read the open source notice in the repo you actually ship.
What the ArtCraft open source license (MIT / Apache-2.0) lets you do
The ArtCraft open source grant lets you use, modify, and share the code, including in commercial work, as long as you keep the notices the license you chose requires. MIT is the shorter notice. Apache-2.0 adds its own notice, change, and patent language.
Pick the one the ArtCraft repository offers. This is an explanation of those standard licenses, not a private ruling about your product. An ArtCraft open source checkout is yours to read and to build. To compile, follow the repository README. This guide does not invent build commands. Releases are the easier way to try an app, and the ArtCraft GitHub organization is where those releases sit. Shipping a modified ArtCraft build means keeping the license text with the code. It also means following the trademark exception in the next section. Calling the work open source does not make an ArtCraft alpha build stable.
The ArtCraft license choice is documented for four repositories, not automatically for every project under the account. CadCraft, DeckCraft, SoundCraft, and the launcher are in the wider snapshot, and you should read each README before you assume the same pair. PhotoCraft v0.7.0 remains early alpha, so a commercial product that vendors that code inherits early-alpha limits. Keep the ArtCraft license file beside any binary you redistribute. The open source text is the contract. The README gaps are the quality warning.
The ArtCraft trademark exception
The ArtCraft name and logo are not in the open source grant. The exception is written in the PhotoCraft brand file docs/brand/LICENSE-brand.txt. A published modified version must remove that name and that logo, unless the fork exists only to propose changes upstream. You may not use them for another product name or for a domain.
Forks of the ArtCraft code are allowed. A published modified build has to drop the name and logo, unless the fork exists only to propose changes upstream. That ArtCraft rule is narrower than the code license. You can sell a service built from the ArtCraft code and still have to ship the published build under a different name. You can study the interface in the repository and still have to drop the marks from a build you publish. The word mark belongs to the ArtCraft Team, which is how the project’s own notices treat it. PSDraw uses the name only to describe the project, and this site is not affiliated with that team.
If you are choosing a domain, do not build it from the ArtCraft name. If you are choosing an icon, do not reuse the ArtCraft logo. Remove both before you publish a modified build, unless that fork exists only to propose changes upstream. The ArtCraft code can stay. Read the brand file in the PhotoCraft repository when you want the project’s own wording.
Is ArtCraft free? Apps vs AI credits
So, is ArtCraft free? The seven ArtCraft apps are free to download and use. That is the apps catalog as recorded for Oct 11, 2026. ArtCraft AI is a different product at app.getartcraft.com. The site describes ArtCraft AI as free to start, with no subscription.
Cloud generation spends paid credits, unless you bring your own compute and third-party subscriptions. Free software and free generation are not the same expectation. The ArtCraft AI studio is a 2D canvas and a 3D scene that can call several models, including Veo, Seedance, Kling, Nano Banana, and GPT Image. Those names are the project’s own feature list, not a promise that every model is included at no cost. The desktop ArtCraft apps do not become paid when you ignore that studio.
PhotoCraft, for example, is free and still early alpha, and its README says generative features are not in that app yet. Budget for credits only if you use hosted generation. Budget time, not money, for the seven apps. The ArtCraft apps do not send you a subscription for the editors themselves. The open source apps are the free part. The metered studio is the part that can cost money. Adobe’s Photography plan (1TB) showed US$19.99 a month when billed annually (US$239.88 a year) and US$29.99 a month month-to-month. That is not an Illustrator price. Check Adobe’s own page before you compare it with a free ArtCraft install.
Is ArtCraft safe to install?
Next, is ArtCraft safe to install if you stay on official files? The practical checks are the publisher's signature, notarization where the README claims it, and SHA256SUMS.txt. For PhotoCraft, Windows MSI and portable zip builds are signed for x64, arm64, and x86. The macOS build is a signed and notarized universal DMG.
Linux builds are AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm, and tar.gz. Each PhotoCraft release includes the checksum file. Other apps may differ, so use that app’s own release. Download only from getartcraft.com/apps, from the ArtCraft Launcher at version 0.2.0, or from releases under github.com/storytold. The ArtCraft download guide walks through the package choice. Compare the checksum before the first launch. A match means the bytes match the ArtCraft release. It does not mean the app is finished. Early alpha can crash, or lack a tool you use every day. Treat that as quality risk, and keep copies of your own work.
PSDraw does not host the installers and did not audit the commits. A safe ArtCraft install, in the narrow sense used here, is an official file with a matching checksum. Gatekeeper or SmartScreen can still warn you about a new publisher. Use the operating system's own open control only after the checksum matches. Skip unofficial sites, and skip any page that tells you to disable security tools first. The ArtCraft Launcher can update apps later, which is safer than accepting a forwarded zip.
Is ArtCraft legal?
Commentators have raised trade-dress questions about ArtCraft. That point is media commentary. This guide does not cite an article body for it. PSDraw makes no legal judgement. This guide does not say a court would agree with those questions, and it does not say you should ignore them.
We will not predict a dispute, score how close an interface looks, or tell a business what it may ship. Those decisions belong with a qualified lawyer who can look at the facts in front of them. The ArtCraft point to remember is still the same one. Media commentary raised trade-dress questions, and this unofficial guide stops there. For the decompiling claims and the developers’ public denial, see is the Adobe clone legal. If you need a yes or no for a product you plan to sell, do not treat this page as that yes or no.
What the project documents about its own name is a separate topic, and it is not a ruling about anyone else's software. The license sections describe MIT or Apache-2.0 and the trademark exception for the ArtCraft name and logo, as recorded on Oct 11, 2026. They are the project’s own terms. They are not advice from PSDraw. Read them before you redistribute a modified build. As of that date, our fact sheet records the commentary and nothing further. Leave this ArtCraft section with that limit clear.
Was ArtCraft written by AI?
Media reports say Brandon Thomas used Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 to recreate seven Adobe apps in Rust. The report does not give a line-count share. Brandon Thomas is the person those reports name as the author. PetaPixel on Oct 7, 2026 is the report this page quotes. PSDraw did not count lines or audit commits. We do not claim we measured the share ourselves.
A large share of generated code does not tell you whether the apps run. The PhotoCraft README is the better public test. It lists layers, masks, adjustment layers, type, shapes, brushes, and native PSD and PSB read and write. It also says the app is not yet a Photoshop replacement for daily professional work. Missing pieces include generative features, 15 tools, typography depth, and plugin compatibility. Quote that ArtCraft document instead of a hype post.
The honest ArtCraft label is early alpha with a written feature list, not an empty demo. PdfCraft was early alpha on Oct 11, 2026 as well. The other five apps were in development. You can install an ArtCraft release and you should expect gaps. Judge an ArtCraft release by the README and by your own files, not by the model name alone. The open source repository is what lets you look.
FAQ
Is ArtCraft completely free?
The seven ArtCraft apps are free. Hosted ArtCraft AI generation is not completely free, because cloud credits are paid unless you bring your own compute and third-party subscriptions. The studio says it is free to start and has no subscription. That is a starting offer, not a promise that every generated image costs nothing. Read the apps and the studio as two ArtCraft products.
Can I use ArtCraft commercially?
You can use the ArtCraft code in commercial work when you follow the MIT or Apache-2.0 notices in the repository you took it from. A product you ship must not reuse the ArtCraft name or logo, and a modified build has to remove them. That trademark exception still applies to a paid product. The license is not a warranty that the alpha apps are fit for a client deadline.
Is ArtCraft actually usable or just an AI-generated demo?
It is more than a screenshot and less than a finished ArtCraft suite. PhotoCraft documents real editing features and, in the same README, says it is not yet a daily professional replacement. PdfCraft was early alpha on Oct 11, 2026. The other five were in development. PetaPixel says Brandon Thomas used Claude Opus 5.5 to recreate the seven apps. It does not give a line-count share. Usable for a trial is a fair reading. Usable as your only production tool is not what the README claims.
Does ArtCraft charge for AI image and video generation?
Hosted generation in ArtCraft AI spends paid credits. You can avoid those credits by bringing your own compute and third-party subscriptions. The seven desktop apps are a different product and are free, and PhotoCraft’s README says generative tools are not in that app yet. The studio page says free to start, with no subscription. Credits are the part that can cost money.
Who owns ArtCraft?
Brandon Thomas is the author named in press coverage. The ArtCraft name and logo are reserved by the project and are not part of the open source grant. Notices treat the name as a trademark of the ArtCraft Team. The code on the named repositories is what the MIT or Apache-2.0 license covers. Ownership of the marks and rights in the code are not the same thing.
Treat the ArtCraft open source release as real code with alpha limits, not as a finished Adobe suite. Read the ArtCraft open source license before you ship a fork. The seven apps are free, the license on the named repositories is MIT or Apache-2.0, and the name and logo stay out of that grant. Hosted ArtCraft AI generation can spend credits even when the editors do not. Install from getartcraft.com or from the storytold releases, and read the README before you plan a migration.
