ArtCraft on Reddit: What Users Are Saying
Unofficial guide · Updated Oct 11, 2026 · 8 min read
TL;DR
Reddit is split on ArtCraft: people love that the apps are free, open source and fast to launch, but most testers say the depth is not there yet.
- Praise: free, open source, quick on Linux, familiar Adobe-style layout.
- Criticism: missing effects, slow big brushes, shortcuts and plugins absent, doubts about AI-written code.
- Pricing confusion: only optional ArtCraft AI credits cost money; the apps are free.

The catch: Reddit threads are opinions from a few days of testing, and the apps change daily. Several threads are also accused of being promotion.
Verdict: ArtCraft is legit open-source software, but Reddit’s consensus is “try it, don’t rely on it yet.”
ArtCraft Reddit threads exploded after Oct 7, 2026, when the ArtCraft team released free, open-source clones of Photoshop, Lightroom, Acrobat and four other Adobe apps. This page summarizes what Reddit users actually said about ArtCraft, PhotoCraft and LightCraft in the first week: the praise, the criticism, the pricing confusion and the legal debate. Every ArtCraft thread below was opened and read on Oct 11, 2026, and we link to each one. We also ran two ArtCraft web builds ourselves so you can compare the ArtCraft Reddit opinions with a hands-on test.
Is there an official ArtCraft subreddit?
Yes, but it is small. The ArtCraft subreddit r/ArtCraftAI describes itself as the official subreddit for the open-source ArtCraft AI creation engine. It was created on Feb 3, 2026, before the Adobe clones launched, and had about 1,500 members on Oct 11, 2026. Most posts there are about the ArtCraft AI studio, with some install questions about the new ArtCraft apps.
A separate r/VectorCraft appeared on Oct 11, 2026, but its own description calls it a fan-made page, and it had one member when we checked. Treat it as unofficial.
The real ArtCraft Reddit conversation happens elsewhere: in r/technology, r/aiwars, r/vfx, r/MotionDesign, r/graphic_design, r/linuxapps, r/linuxmasterrace, r/LinusTechTips, r/software and the anti-Adobe community r/FuckAdobe. Big non-English threads ran in r/de, r/designBR and r/indotech too. If you want help installing ArtCraft, r/ArtCraftAI and the GitHub issue trackers under the storytold account are the most direct places to ask.

What Reddit users like about ArtCraft
The most common praise is simple: ArtCraft is free and open source, with no subscription for the apps. In r/FuckAdobe, the top replies to a critical post point out that anyone can download, modify and fork the ArtCraft code, and that the paid part is only optional AI credits.
Linux users are the warmest ArtCraft Reddit crowd, and LightCraft Reddit feedback is the most positive of all. In r/linuxapps, the original poster installed LightCraft and PhotoCraft and called them awesome, and other replies say the apps open almost instantly. In r/linuxmasterrace, a post about running the ArtCraft suite on Linux drew about 600 upvotes, with one reply noting that PhotoCraft launching instantly already beats a slow Adobe install.
Some practical users report the basics work. One r/FuckAdobe commenter says the PDF app handles editing text and dropping in a signature, which beat their old Ubuntu workflow. In r/graphic_design, a team says it loaded the Photoshop and Illustrator clones at work and found them “not bad”, while missing many options. Hobbyists and small businesses, several replies argue, do not need every professional feature.
What Reddit users criticize
The sharpest ArtCraft Reddit criticism is about depth. In r/MotionDesign, a top reply says the AI cloned the interface well but almost every effect did nothing, and dragging a solid ran at roughly ten frames per second. In r/vfx, a brush test at 1,000-pixel size on a billboard-size canvas left the clones far behind Photoshop, and another user missed colour-space export options, EXR export and content-aware fill.
PhotoCraft Reddit feedback is more divided, and workflow gaps come up often. Users in r/graphic_design say option-drag duplication and other shortcuts did not work, drag-and-drop onto the canvas failed on Wayland, and libraries and quick-key settings do not transfer. In r/LinusTechTips, one person describes fighting the PhotoCraft pen tool while masking a subject.
Trust is the other theme. Many replies call the ArtCraft apps vibe-coded and ask who will maintain them in five years, or what happens to plugins. Several threads accuse the wave of ArtCraft Reddit posts of being astroturfed promotion. Others point out that GIMP, Krita, LibreOffice and DaVinci Resolve already exist and are proven.

The legal debate on Reddit
Legality is the most heated ArtCraft Reddit topic, and none of these threads is legal advice. A Brazilian design subreddit, r/designBR, ran a popular post whose title claimed someone had decompiled (“decompilou”) the Adobe package, and r/aiwars hosted a thread titled around the “Adobe decomp/clone”. In r/MotionDesign, one commenter called the whole thing a Napster moment and expected regulation.
Other users push back. Several note that the ArtCraft team calls its method clean-room, meaning new code written from observed behaviour rather than copied source. The developers have publicly denied using Adobe’s code, proprietary resources or shaders, according to Xataka, and say PSD support comes from Adobe’s published file specification.
Reddit also expects a response from Adobe. A recurring view is that Adobe will not sit back, while others argue a free clone will barely dent Adobe’s revenue, as earlier free tools did not. Our Adobe clone explainer collects the public claims and responses with sources, and the ArtCraft open source guide explains the licence and trademark rules.
Our hands-on ArtCraft review vs Reddit opinions
To check the Reddit claims, we ran two official ArtCraft web builds on Oct 11, 2026: PhotoCraft v0.7.0 and PdfCraft v0.6.0, downloaded from GitHub Releases with checksums verified, served locally and opened in Chromium on a Mac.
PhotoCraft opened our six-layer test PSD correctly. The group, the hidden layer and the text layer all came through, and the text layer showed a type icon instead of being flattened. PdfCraft opened a three-page PDF and showed a full tools list. Its Organize pages panel marks rotate, delete, extract, insert, replace and split as Ready, while the Edit a PDF panel says more is coming in a later milestone.
Our ArtCraft review matches the calmer Reddit opinions. Opening and organizing files works well. We did not test large-brush performance, effects or export fidelity, which is where Reddit testers found the biggest problems. If you only need to view a PSD, a lighter tool such as our free PSD viewer avoids installing an alpha app at all.

Is ArtCraft legit? Reddit's verdict
Is ArtCraft legit? Yes, in the sense that matters most: the ArtCraft apps are real, free, open-source programs with public code, signed installers and checksums, and the paid plans only cover optional AI credits. None of the threads we read showed malware or a hidden subscription for the apps.
Whether ArtCraft is good enough is a different question. Read enough ArtCraft reviews on Reddit and the verdict is “not yet” for professional work. The consensus from r/vfx, r/MotionDesign and r/graphic_design is that the interface is impressive and the depth is thin. The consensus from Linux communities is that a fast, free Adobe-style app is welcome even in alpha.
Our advice follows Reddit: try one ArtCraft app on a copy of a real file, keep your current tools for client work, and check again in a few months. One r/linuxmasterrace user set a reminder to revisit ArtCraft in December, which sounds about right.
FAQ
Is ArtCraft legit according to Reddit?
Mostly yes. Reddit users agree the ArtCraft apps are real, free and open source. They disagree on quality: many say ArtCraft is fine for light work but not ready for professional jobs.
What does Reddit think of PhotoCraft?
Linux users praise how fast PhotoCraft opens. Professional testers in r/vfx and r/graphic_design report slow large brushes, missing export options and shortcuts that do not work yet.
Is there an ArtCraft subreddit?
Yes. r/ArtCraftAI calls itself the official subreddit for the ArtCraft AI engine and had about 1,500 members on Oct 11, 2026. Most ArtCraft Reddit discussion happens in larger subreddits.
Do Reddit users trust AI-written software like ArtCraft?
Many do not yet. Common worries are long-term maintenance, bugs from unreviewed AI code and missing plugins. Supporters reply that the code is open, so anyone can audit or fork ArtCraft.
Is ArtCraft worth trying?
Yes, as a free experiment. Test one ArtCraft app on a copy of a real project, and keep your current software for paid work until the releases mature.
The ArtCraft Reddit picture after one week is clear: free and open source wins goodwill, alpha quality loses professionals. Use this ArtCraft Reddit summary as a starting point, read the threads that match your work, and test ArtCraft yourself before you switch.
