The catch: the project’s own gap list ranks “PPTX never tested against a corpus of real decks” as its number-one beta blocker.

Verdict: Try DeckCraft for new decks, layouts and practicing Morph transitions; keep PowerPoint for comment threads, printing and decks you receive from clients.

DeckCraft is the presentation app in the ArtCraft Crafting Apps suite: a free Microsoft PowerPoint alternative written in pure Rust and released on GitHub on Oct 7, 2026. This unofficial DeckCraft guide shows how to open DeckCraft online in your browser, what it can build today, how DeckCraft vs PowerPoint compares row by row, and where to get the DeckCraft download for Windows, Mac and Linux. Everything here comes from the DeckCraft README, its public gap list and our own test of the official web build on Oct 14, 2026. PSDraw is not affiliated with the ArtCraft team.

What is DeckCraft?

DeckCraft is a presentation editor from the team behind ArtCraft, the group that released free, open-source counterparts to Photoshop, Word, Excel, Acrobat and other Adobe and Microsoft apps in October 2026. The GitHub description calls it a clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft PowerPoint, rebuilt in pure Rust. Clean-room means it was built from public specifications and observed behaviour, not from Microsoft code, and the README says DeckCraft is not affiliated with or endorsed by Microsoft.

The pitch is a workflow you already know: a ribbon with Home, Insert, Design, Transitions, Animations and Slide Show tabs, slide thumbnails with sections on the left, speaker notes and a status bar. One Rust codebase runs natively on macOS, Windows, Linux and BSD and compiles to WebAssembly for the browser, with no Electron wrapper and no subscription.

It is also built for automation. The README counts 200+ commands with undo, all scriptable from the CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server — the same commands the interface uses. Our test of the web build opened a sample deck with diagrams and notes on the first try.

Tested by the PSDraw team on Oct 14, 2026 with the official DeckCraft v0.6.1 web build (checksum verified).

DeckCraft vs Microsoft PowerPoint

DeckCraft vs PowerPoint comes down to how new your files are. For a deck you start in DeckCraft, the building blocks — masters, layouts, shapes, tables, charts, transitions and animations — are all present. For a deck you receive, the gap list is honest: .pptx round-trips have never been tested against a corpus of real decks, and comment threads, SVG pictures and printing are known gaps.

The table below turns the DeckCraft README and its ranked gap list into simple marks. PowerPoint keeps a yes on rows where DeckCraft is still catching up; DeckCraft wins the last row outright.

DeckCraft vs PowerPoint: the Transitions ribbon with Morph, Fade, Wipe and Push effects

What DeckCraft can do today

Deck building is the core. DeckCraft has slide masters with eleven layouts and placeholders that inherit position and formatting, 150+ preset shapes with adjust handles, connectors that stay glued to shapes, and freeform drawing. Text editing happens in place, with full font and paragraph formatting, bullets and numbering, and autofit.

Content and motion are covered: pictures with crop and corrections, tables with styles, charts and SmartArt basics, transitions including Morph, and entrance, emphasis, exit and motion-path animations. Presenting includes a presenter flow with speaker notes. In our test, the sample “Northern Lights” deck rendered its diagrams, sections and notes exactly as a PowerPoint user would expect.

File exchange is real both ways: DeckCraft opens and saves PowerPoint .pptx and exports PDF as slides, notes pages or handouts. If you work across the suite, the WordCraft guide covers documents and the GridCraft guide covers spreadsheets — DeckCraft is the slides sibling in the same Office-shaped family, and one of the few alternatives to PowerPoint that round-trips .pptx natively.

How to use DeckCraft online: your first deck

The quickest way is our hosted copy of the official web build — a free PowerPoint alternative online with no account. Click the button at the top of this page or open DeckCraft online. The first visit downloads about 9 MB, then the editor opens in a new tab, by default with a short sample deck so you can see the canvas working. DeckCraft online works best in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Step 1: pick the New Slide button and choose a layout from the master. Step 2: click into the title placeholder and type; the placeholder formatting inherits from the master automatically. Step 3: use Insert, then Shapes, to draw a shape, and drag a connector from its edge to another shape — it stays glued when you move things.

Step 4: open the Transitions tab and apply Morph between two slides that share an object to see it interpolate. Step 5: to open an existing file, choose File, then Open, and pick a .pptx from your computer. Save downloads a copy, because the browser cannot write over your original.

DeckCraft download: Windows, Mac, Linux and the web

Get every DeckCraft download from the DeckCraft releases on GitHub or the DeckCraft page on getartcraft.com. DeckCraft v0.6.1 was published on Oct 12, 2026, five days after the repository appeared — release cadence is days, not months, so re-check the tag before you bookmark an installer.

On Windows there are MSI installers and portable zips for x64, ARM64 and 32-bit x86. On macOS there is one universal DMG, plus a separate command-line tool. Linux users get AppImage, Flatpak, deb, rpm and tar.gz builds for x86_64 and ARM64, plus a RISC-V tarball, and FreeBSD has its own build.

The web build is a static site zip; that is the file PSDraw hosts, unchanged and checksum-verified. Every release includes SHA256SUMS.txt, so compare the checksum before you install. Our ArtCraft download guide walks through the checksum step for every ArtCraft app.

DeckCraft on GitHub

The DeckCraft GitHub repository is github.com/storytold/deckcraft, under the same storytold account as PhotoCraft and the other Crafting Apps. It was created on Oct 7, 2026 and passed 3,000 stars within a week. The code is offered under your choice of MIT or Apache-2.0; the ArtCraft name and logo are trademarks outside that license, and our ArtCraft open source guide explains the fork rules.

The repository publishes a ranked gap list and a roadmap — the project is explicit that DeckCraft is in alpha heading for beta, and it names file-format corpus testing and stability fixes as the top blockers. Issues and pull requests are open, so a .pptx that opens wrongly is exactly the report they want.

DeckCraft is also scriptable: deckcraft-cli exposes 200+ commands over a CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server, so AI agents can build and edit decks. Our ArtCraft MCP guide shows the one-line setup for Claude, Codex and Cursor.

Known limitations of DeckCraft

The gap list ranks its top blockers openly. PPTX has never been tested against a corpus of real decks, and there are known data-loss and crash paths on common operations. Round-trips drop comment threads, some media options and the rewind transition, and SVG pictures do not render (EMF and WMF do).

Everyday gaps matter too: DeckCraft is English-only for now, there is no printing, fonts are limited to Regular, Bold and Italic faces, image paste fails on Windows and Linux, and the Animation Pane covers 64 of roughly 190 PowerPoint effects with a thin timeline. Charts cannot edit their underlying data grid yet, and presenter view does not place itself on the second display.

Two limits are specific to DeckCraft online. There is no autosave in the browser, so Save downloads a copy. And DeckCraft is built for desktop: on a phone it may be slow or not open at all.

Which browsers can run DeckCraft online?

DeckCraft online runs in any modern desktop browser on WebAssembly. The project’s hosting notes say the build needs no cross-origin isolation headers, so plain static hosting is enough — that is how we serve it, byte-for-byte from the official release.

Desktop Chrome and Edge are what we verified on Oct 14, 2026, and the safest bet. Firefox and Safari can run WebAssembly builds of this kind, but the project does not claim they are tested; if the editor does not start, try Chrome or Edge first.

Phones and tablets are not the target: the ribbon, slide panel and presenter tools assume a wide viewport and a mouse. The launch block on this page warns mobile visitors for that reason. If you are presenting from the browser build, do a dry run on the meeting machine first and keep a PDF export as the backup — DeckCraft exports PDF as slides, notes pages or handouts.

Working with spreadsheets too?

FAQ

Is DeckCraft free?

Yes. DeckCraft costs nothing and its code is MIT or Apache-2.0, so you can use it at work too. The ArtCraft name and logo are not part of that license.

Can I use DeckCraft online without installing it?

Yes. The official web build runs in your browser. Use the button at the top of this page to open our hosted copy; the first visit downloads about 9 MB.

Does DeckCraft open and save .pptx files?

Yes, it reads and writes .pptx and exports PDF as slides, notes pages or handouts. The project warns that .pptx has not been tested against real-world decks at scale, and comment threads and some media options are dropped — keep a backup of important decks.

Is DeckCraft a good PowerPoint alternative?

For new decks — masters, layouts, shapes, charts, Morph and animations — yes, and among PowerPoint alternatives it is the rare one with a native .pptx round-trip. For client round-trips, comment threads and printing, PowerPoint is still the right tool today.

Is DeckCraft made by Microsoft?

No. ArtCraft DeckCraft is an independent clean-room project; its README says it is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by Microsoft.

Are my slides uploaded when I use DeckCraft online?

No. In our test on Oct 14, 2026, opening and editing a deck in the same official build we host sent no upload request; the only network traffic was the app’s own files. Exports arrive as browser downloads.

Is DeckCraft safe to download?

Download it only from the storytold GitHub releases or getartcraft.com, and check the file against SHA256SUMS.txt. Avoid sites that offer repackaged installers.

DeckCraft is a genuinely usable free PowerPoint alternative for building decks from scratch, still alpha. Open DeckCraft online to try it in a minute, and keep PowerPoint for comment-heavy client work and printing.
